Playing Sit and Go Poker for a Living

Jay Robertson e-mailed me this question about playing sit and go poker for a living. I am posting the question and my reply here for everyone to read.

SNG for a livingQUESTION: “I hear about poker players who play online poker for a living. One article I read talked about sit and go tournaments. Can people really make a living playing site and go poker online? What kind of strategies do you use to win?…”  Jay Robertson

ANSWER: The short answer is yes. You can win enough playing sit-n-go tournaments to earn a living, even playing at the lower limits. Some might say especially playing at the lower limits where weaker, looser players are splashing around in pots they have no business being in.

Sit-n-Go tournaments, sometimes referred to as SNG have really caught on in the online poker community. There is a wide variety of games available around the clock, especially at the larger online poker sites.

Typically, a sit-n-go tournament is a 9 or 10 player table with the final three players winning the money. There are also shorthanded sit-n-go tourneys where 5 or 6 players enter and the top 2 players win the money. I personally prefer the shorthanded games and the turbo (accelerated blinds) games at FullTilt poker.

Some satellite sit-n-go tournaments are offered where you buy in for a certain amount of money and then the top finisher wins an entry into a bigger tournament. There are also step tournaments where players buy in for a certain amount and the top finishers advance to the next step where the buy in is more expensive. There may be several more steps before the last tournament where the final cash prizes are won.

How to play sit and go poker for a livingPROPER SIT-N-GO STRATEGY CAN LEAD TO CONSISTENT WINS: Most players at the lower limits are less than stellar players. There are many reasons for this. Some examples are newbies, people who play for the thrill of sucking out, people who play under the influence (no… not me!), etc. Weaker players are also attracted to sit-n-go tourneys because they want to limit the amount of money they will lose and they’re hoping for a lucky run so they can score a win.

Winning players can take advantage of the loose players in sit-n-go tournaments. It can make a profitable situation. No, you can’t win every game you play, but a good player should be able to finish in the money upwards of two-thirds of the time. The other times you may make a mistake, you may run into a monster that you didn’t read properly or you may get sucked out by a player drawing for their inside straight or some such nonsense. There are times when you will play perfectly and still lose. That’s part of our game and we have to accept it.

HERE IS MY FORMULA TO GET STARTED PLAYING SIT-N-GO POKER FOR A LIVING:

Review my sit-n-go strategies thoroughly before you start playing. The vast majority of players in the sit-n-go tournaments have no real strategy. They react to hands as they’re dealt without regard to the increasing blind structures. They don’t understand the value of position. They haven’t seen winning sit-n-go strategies that you will learn by bookmarking my site, reading my articles and watching the videos. You will have a decided advantage against these uneducated players.

Start out in the lower limits to learn. Keep records of your wins and losses and notes about anything you learned. Gradually build your bankroll up from your winnings. Once you’re winning consistently at your limits begin playing slightly higher limits. Keep an eye on building your bankroll and increasing your average daily win.

Take advantage of the player notes that are available at most online poker sites. I especially like the color codes that are also available on Full Tilt Poker. I assign colors to some players;

Green means easy money – probably a newbie or a very poor player who doesn’t know anything about sit-n-go strategy. We can exact a great deal of pain on these players with relative ease. Just think of it as their education.

Yellow means an aggressive player who can be dangerous. I try to make special notes about these players such as how they bet certain starting hands, how they bet the flop, etc.  When the time is right you can use your knowledge to spring traps on these players. I use their aggression against them to win big pots.

Red means an expert player. This is probably someone like you and me who is playing for a living. We will generally only play absolute premium hands against them.

Some of the important things you will learn in Johnny’s Sit-n-Go Pro Video Course include how to vary your play in separate stages. There are basically three stages of each sit-n-go game.  Each stage requires a different style of play. Uneducated players are oblivious to this!

Sit and go poker requires a very different strategy from regular games.

I used the strategies for early, middle and late stages of sit and go games and I went from a sometimes winner to winning a lot. I expect to win them now.

I play almost every day but I avoid you whenever I can though ;)

That’s right, you have to shift gears in the game. When I finally learned that I really started winning more consistently.

This is so true. Most of the other players don’t seem to have a clue. The following is an excerpt of an e-mail from JR, creator of Sit-N-Go Pro System:

    Hi Loni,

The truth is, many players are either drunk [no disrespect to the drunk blonde intended], hungover or playing multiple tables at once. Or all of the above! They’re not paying attention to your betting patterns. They’re just playing the CARDS, not the PLAYERS…

    See You at the Top,
    Johnny “JR” Rothman

I just wanted to get your opinion on whether or not I should start playing Sit-N-Go’s for cash ans at what level you might suggest.
    I am ITM 61%
    Totals 250pt SNG’s=118
    1st’s=20 times
    2nd’s=26 times
    3rd’s=27 times
    4th’s=18 times

I decided to pay 100+ consecutive 250 point BUY-IN SNG’s on Full Tilt to see what the results would.

    Thanks
