Video: Joan Rivers Goes Off on Annie Duke

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 27, 2009 | Posted in: Poker Tips | Comments (1)

Check out this video clip from Celebrity Apprentice. Joan and Melissa Rivers going off. It’s funny stuff.

Joan says, “You’re a pooookaaaahhh playah, a pooookaaaahhh playah. That’s beyond white trash…”

And as she points out, pooookaaaahhh playahs have no first names. But she’s wrong cause I have two names; Drunk and Blonde.

Joan needs to have a beer and chill out.

I think poker players are the most awesome people in the world too. : ) Thanks for sticking up for us Annie.

I’m sorry to all you gentle poker players, that I had to expose you to this maniacal tirade.

My Tour of Vegas Poker Rooms (April 09)

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 25, 2009 | Posted in: Poker Tips | Comments (0)

This is my second post, in my quest to tour all Las Vegas Poker Rooms.  This was a profitable trip but would have been much more so if I hadn’t suffered several bad beats including having aces cracked after my 4x preflop raise was called by 4 4 in the blind, who went on to hit a 4 on the flop.  The board was rainbow with a Q high.  I ended up losing a lot of money on that hand.  It makes you crazy sometimes…

Here are my ratings from this most recent trip.  Note: Your experience may differ from mine.  Please leave your comments to chime in if you agree with me, or if I’ve just put down your favorite hangout.

The M Resort – Best brawl of the trip.  Two guys almost got in a fist fight while I was there.  (Note to self: I’ll blog about table manners some other time) The M Resort is a new resort way out Las Vegas Blvd. South.  It’s a beautiful resort and a nice poker room.

Monte Carlo – A decent poker room but the players weren’t too friendly and this is where my aces got cracked.  It’s probably a good place to play if you’re looking for a soft game.  I’ll try it again another trip.

Fitzgeralds – A fairly tough cast of characters but I ended up having quite a profitable session there.  It’s a small poker room, but pretty friendly.

Riviera – A decent poker room with soft games and good cocktail service.  This is one I’ll definitely get back to.

Sam’s Town – A friendly poker room on Boulder Highway with mostly local players.  The players were pretty good there but I also managed a nice win in their 2/4 limit game (which was all that was available).

South Point – I’m not so sure what to make of this place.  The players seemed pretty tough.  The poker room was decent enough.

Tuscany - A smaller poker room with limited game selection.  Everyone was friendly and it was a profitable session.  The cocktail waitress made sure I didn’t get dehydrated.  : )

Texas Station – Located on Rancho Drive, this poker room attracts mostly local players.  I played their spread limit game.  I’m not a big fan of spread limit but it was slightly profitable anyway.  Cocktail service was lousy here!

Palace Station – Located on Sahara Avenue, just West of the Strip, their poker room and cocktail service is pretty good.

Boulder Station – Located on Boulder Highway, this is another poker room frequented by tough local players.  It has good game selection and cocktail service is good.

Wynn – This is my favorite poker room for their ambiance, game selection and action!  I played there twice and have very nice profits both times.  The players there have money and will call huge bets, so just wait til you pick up the nuts and bet big.  You’ll be raking in the chips.  I made $260 in half an hour!

MGM Grand - This is a beautiful poker room with great game selection, good cocktail service and soft games.  Where else in the world can you play poker while you’re looking out at a lion habitat?  This is another of my all time favorite poker rooms.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – 10 Common Opponent Errors To Start Exploiting Today!

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 18, 2009 | Posted in: Poker Tips | Comments (0)

Single table online poker tournaments, popularly known as ‘Sit N Go’ tournaments are an increasingly popular form of online poker. Usually lasting around 1 hour and playing 3 places these tournaments are available at buy-in levels ranging from just $1 up to $1000! This article focuses on the lower buy-in Sit N Go poker tournaments and examines common errors made by the players you will find there.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #1 – Playing Too Loose Early

Many opponents will play far to many hands at the start of a Sit N Go – when the blinds are low. The most common error is to play ‘easily dominated’ hands such as an Ace with a small kicker. Playing only the best starting hands early conserves chips for the more important later stages. If your opponents are playing too loose early make sure you raise strongly when dealt a premium hand – they will be a great source of chips.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #2 – Multi-Way Pots and Position

Many opponents will enter a multi-way pot by calling a raise pre-flop with a medium strength hand during the early blind levels. This is a dangerous play with a medium pair (for example), these players will have no idea where they stand after the flop and may be out of position relative to the original raiser. Playing for set-value for a small pre-flop investment is one thing – but calling raises in multi-way pots is usually asking to lose a lot of chips.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #3 – Adjusting to Increasing Blinds

As the blinds increase and the number of players go down then adjustments to your starting hands are required. In the middle stages of a Sit N Go Poker Tournament your raising requirements need to go down the hands with which you can call a raise need to tighten up considerably. A common error would be calling a raise with a small pair – when the blinds reach 10% of your stack implied odds for this play disappear!

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #4 – Bad Play From The Blinds

If you never defend your big blind your will quickly become short stacked in Sit N Go Poker. Conversely always defending will lead to being ‘trapped’ for a large pot sooner or later. Watch for opponents making errors at the extremes and balance your own play from the blinds – you need to put enough doubt in opponents minds as to whether they can steal from you without going over the top.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #5 – Understanding the Bubble

Many opponents will not understand the dynamic of bubble play in Sit N Go poker strategy. Errors come in various forms and include not being aware of stack size adjustments and calling all-in bets without premium holdings. Most of the profit in Sit N Go tournaments comes from correct bubble strategy. Make sure you check out resources such as the comprehensive strategy articles at ‘Sit and Go Planet’ to get a profitable edge in this area.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #6 – Understanding Chip Equity Models

The Independent Chip Model (ICM) is a key component of good Sit N Go poker strategy. This converts your chip stack into a dollar ‘prize pool equity’ figure. This figure is then used to compare your risk against reward for all-in confrontations at the bubble. Understanding ICM and adjusting correctly will give you a huge advantage in Sit N Go poker tournaments.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #7 – Playing ‘In The Money’

Once the bubble is burst in a Sit N Go poker tournament your opponents raising and calling ranges will also change dramatically. This in turn will affect how many hands you raise yourself. Correctly understanding the ‘In the Money’ strategy change will allow you to exploit your opponents weaknesses and move up the payout ladder.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #8 – Heads Up Battles

Once the blinds are more than 10% of your stack it is possible to play in such a way as to become ‘mathematically unexploitable’. Of course it is still possible to adjust to your opponents play, but using ‘Nash Equilibrium’ models will ensure you can not lose more than your share over time. Readers interested in this can search for the freely available Sit N Go strategy eBook ‘A Comedy of Errors’.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #9 – Playing Trap Hands

There are many adjustments in Sit N Go poker strategy that do not seem obvious to inexperienced players. One such area is ‘trap hands’. As the blinds increase and the number of players shrinks some hands become more or less playable. Examples include AK, Suited Connectors and Small Pairs. Make sure you understand the correct strategy adjustments for various levels and see those results improve.

Sit N Go Poker Strategy – Opponent Error #1 – Never Stop Learning!

Many of your opponents will get into routine of playing Sit N Go poker using the same old ideas and strategies. The real winners in these games are people who take the time to study, find the weakest sites and opponents and look for their own ‘leaks’ in addition to those of opponents. Sit and Go Planet is regularly updated with strategy articles for everyone from beginners to advanced players. Make sure you do not get left behind!

“DrunkBlonde” Now Sponsored by Bodog Poker!

I’m happy to announce my new partnership with Bodog Poker.  I’ll still be playing at Full Tilt, Doyles Room and Ultimate Bet, but I’m very excited to now be associated with Bodog.  I’ll be playing more there now, and producing more of my game videos for your viewing.  Look for my posts when I resume video production in the near future.

It isn’t easy to be accepted by Bodog but I survived the vetting process and I’m eager to get started.  Bodog has some great promotions you should be aware of and I’ll keep you informed about new promotions as they become available.  The first I’d like to tell you about is the bad beat bonus. You’ve heard me say that nobody cares about your bad beat stories. Well, it turns out I was wrong.  Bodog does care and they’ll give you a bonus (up to $1000) to soften the blow.

Here’s how it works.  If you’re playing a cash game and have a full house with aces full of kings or better, and you lose to four of a kind or better you win 100 times the big blind to a maximum of $1,000!  Click the banner below for full details on how to qualify for the bad beat bonus.

To claim your Bad Beat Bonus, email poker@bodoglife.com or call 1-866-909-2237 as soon as you can to provide your hand details (your hand number and stakes will appear on a player note that summarizes your game).  Your hand number must be submitted within 48hrs of playing it.

The bad beat bonus is just one of the reasons I think Bodog is one of the best online poker sites.

How to Take Advantage When You Have a Good Poker Hand Like Pocket Aces

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 12, 2009 | Posted in: Poker Tips | Comments (0)

I often hear poker players lamenting about their most recent loss with pocket aces.  It does seem that pocket aces get cracked fairly regularly so some examination of the subject is in order.  Here is an article written by Tony Flores that may be helpful.  db

How to Take Advantage When You Have a Good Poker Hand Like Pocket Aces

One thing in Texas Hold ‘em that is often confused in poker is a winning hand and a good starting hand. Pocket aces are the ultimate starting hand and will always see their owner anxious to get their chips in. However, no matter what poker chips you have in front of you, the aces at the start of the hand do not win you anything and you must not over-rate their value.

Picture yourself twiddling your treasured Las Vegas Chip whilst you are sat at a 10-seater poker table with (AdAc) and you happily limp in and call the big blind. You are pleased to see another 6 victims match your bet. The flop comes and brings 2s Qs Jh. You smile to yourself feeling confident and bluff once again with another minimum bet which is only enough to scare off 1 player leaving you still with 5 opponents. The turn brings 9s. You think to yourself nobody is going to be lucky enough to have 2 spades in their hand but you decide to bet big as you don’t want anybody getting a lucky river card. Your huge raise of 4 times the pot manages to kill off 3 more players with the other 2 calling.

The river brings Jc and everyone goes all-in. You turn over your aces before being stunned when player 2 shows his Td8c which has hit a straight. But before this bad beat has had time to sink-in you witness player 3 from the big blind revealing his 7s4s which has taken the hand with a flush. You may put this down to a simple piece of bad luck, after all sometimes there is nothing you can do to prevent your aces being cracked. However this example shows a classic mistake that I have witnessed many a time during my years playing the game.

Aces are the favorites pre-flop, but they will still only possess the best hand by the river around 30% of the time. When 3 players drop out this percentage is still well below 50% so the odds are still against you winning even at this early stage. However a raise at this point of up to 2 times the big blind would have seen 3 or 4 callers at the most and more importantly it would have seen the big blind fold his 7s4s and also knocked out the player with Td8c. It would also leave you realistically up against other strong starting hands such as KK, QQ, AK, AQ, JJ and so on which are more likely to pay you off.

Another mistake people make is not betting high enough on the flop. A decent sized bet in the above example would have seen Player 2 fold and Player 3 would probably have raised which would have given you all the info you needed to know he had hit his flush so you could have found an escape route. Alternatively if the players hadn’t hit anything then you would have taken the pot down there and then.

The real secret to the power of AA is AGGRESSION. If you come out aggressive with your aces then you usually know where you stand throughout the hand. Try to narrow down the field to no more than 3 opponents seeing the flop and always raise the big blind to avoid limpers.

I’m a member of a number of online poker forums.  I rarely show up at most of them, but there is one that stands out as the best of the best.  I’m referring to Doyle Brunson’s Poker Forum.  I’ve been a member since January 2009 and it’s the only poker forum I’m regularly active in.  I highly recommend that you check it out.  Whatever game you play, you’re likely to pick up some profitable pointers.  One of the nice features is that you can talk about any online poker site.  I’ve been admonished in other poker forums for mentioning the competition but you won’t run into that crap here as long as you’re not violating their rules.

As I’m writing this there are only about 276 registered members so it’s pretty intimate forum for serious poker players.  Registration is free and members can discuss poker with pros like Doyle Brunson and Mike Caro.  All you have to do is get in there and start posting messages and they’ll frequently reply with great advice.  How often do you have a chance to mingle with the pros like this?  This is a friendly poker forum – you’ll be glad you joined.

While you’re there send me a message to let me know you joined up and if you have any problems or questions I’ll be happy to help out however I can.
