Poker in Wendover, Nevada

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 29, 2008 | Posted in: Poker Tips | Comments (0)

I just visited Salt Lake City over the past four days.  I enjoy trying new poker rooms whenever I travel. I have a large collection of poker chips that I collect when I play in a new casino. All the SLC locals know the place to go play poker is in Wendover, Nevada. I had to go check it out so I made the 2 hour drive to the border town of Wendover. I played some $1 – $2 no-limit poker at the Wendover Nugget and Montego Bay casinos. Both poker rooms were a bit smaller than I’m used to but it was poker as usual when I sat down at the table.

Smoking at the poker table

My only real problem with these casinos was the fact that they allow smoking at the tables. Now, I have nothing against smokers but I don’t smoke. You’re playing in close quarters at the poker table so I don’t particularly enjoy smoking at the table. Of course, as luck would have it, about half of the players were puffing away while I dodged the billowing smoke from their ciggies. In my opinion, all poker rooms should be non-smoking but that’s just me.

I love sitting down at a table where the players are drinking and having a good time. It seems when I’m in a new house where nobody knows me, that the guys think they can boss me around at the table. This was no exception. I simply played a tight game waiting for premium cards or good speculative cards. Once I figured I had an advantage I fired into the pot and raked them in one after the other. By the end of the evening I had earned a decent profit and gained the respect of my drunken poker opponents.

Patience at the Poker Table

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 23, 2008 | Posted in: Poker Tips | Comments (0)

Whether you’re playing online, at a home game or at the local casino’s poker room, one of the top traits of winning poker players is patience. This patience is fueled by a steely resolve to make the very best decisions and maximize profits. Oddly enough, our patience can be tested at both extremes. When we have a big stack (lot of chips) we tend to start playing looser, taking too many risks and taking on the role of table bully. This is a good way to piss away chips if done carelessly. At the other extreme we have the short stack (low amount of chips). One problem is the player’s definition of short stack. Some players become desperate after a few losses when they still have a moderate stack size. They underestimate the value of their chips relative to the blind structure and start pushing all in or making risky moves at less than ideal times.

Patient poker players exercise patience, selecting good starting hands, betting to maximize their wins and folding at the first sign their hand is not going to win. One key to their success is having more chips to push into the pot with their monster hands because they haven’t squandered it playing a desperate game.

Where is the Love??

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 11, 2008 | Posted in: Rants & Raves | Comments (1)

I anxiously check server stats every day and I see that there are lots of folks visiting my blog and you’re spending some time viewing the poker videos and browsing through my blog entries. That makes me happy! I love writing about poker and I don’t mind sharing what I’m learning along the way.

Anyway… although I’m getting lots of visitors, not many of you are leaving me comments. Come on now – it’s easy! Just click on the “comments” link at the bottom of any blog entry that happens to get your attention. Scroll down to the bottom of the page that pops up and there will be a comment form where you can tell me how brilliant I am – or what a donkey I was for making a certain play.

It’s ok. I can take it, I just want to hear from you so I’ll know I’m loved.

Beating Drunks at the Poker Table

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 9, 2008 | Posted in: Rants & Raves | Comments (0)

Hey!!

I was reviewing site logs and learned that some of you are finding my web site by going to your favorite search engine and typing in “how to beat drunks at poker.”  Cut it out!

It isn’t nice to pick on drunks.

Sure, you might be able to beat a slobbering drunk chick out of her money but that isn’t nice.  We provide entertainment at the table and make sure the game stays alive. Give us a break and quit trying to figure out how to take our money.

I’m on to you and I’ll be watching.

$10 Heads Up Sit n Go Video – 4/8/08

Heads Up Sit n Go Poker Video

$10 Heads Up Game on Full Tilt Poker 4/8/08

I’m fast becoming a fan of the heads up sit n go tourneys at Full Tilt Poker. Notice the really cool stats I have for my opponent. This is publicly available information that really helps with your decision making during these games. If you don’t know how to get these stats send me an e-mail (webmaster@drunkblondepoker.com) and I’ll see what I can do to help you out.

Full Tilt Poker has a great variety of sit n go games. Due to the size of Full Tilt, which includes U.S. Players, it’s always easy to find a game.

I’m working out the bugs in my video system so you should be getting more videos in the very near future. I play poker daily but I don’t always like to record my playing. It gives me something else I have to think about and can be a little distracting. But, my drunken poker friends have requested more – so more I shall do!

In this $10 heads up game my opponent’s virtual seat doesn’t even warm up before he’s bounced out of the room.  Jeez, I didn’t even have time to pop the cap off my beer.

Let me know what you think of these videos. Leave me a comment cuz that helps keep me enthusiastic. Do the videos help? Do you want to see more? Any suggestions?

Compassion at the Poker Table

Posted by DrunkBlonde | April 3, 2008 | Posted in: Rants & Raves | Comments (1)

I recently won a large pot on a $1 – $2 no limit Texas Hold ‘Em game at my local casino. I played the hand for maximum profit and raked in over $250, but when I finally looked over at my opponent, I felt like crying.

Poker is generally about competition. While we may enjoy socializing with the other players, we are always in competition. It is a game that generally favors aggressive players, provided they are skilled and exercise good judgement. I do care about other people but there isn’t usually much room for compassion in poker competition. I normally do a good job of differentiating my good natured day-to-day disposition and my hard nosed poker disposition.

This particular hand was obviously a little different from most. In early position, I held K K in my hand and made it $10 to go. Three other players remained and the flop brought K 6 6 giving me the nut full house. I slow played and the hand was checked around to the button. The player on the button (who had just joined the game) bet out $25. I smooth called as did one other player. The other player folded. Similar action occurred on the turn, building a nice sized pot. We lost one more player during this round of play, leaving just me and the player on the button. I was having trouble containing my excitement when the river came. The only hand that could beat me was if my opponent was holding 6 6 in the pocket. Based on the betting patterns of the player on the button, I did not believe he had two 6’s. I felt it was more likely that he had a 6 for trips or possibly a lower full house. The player on the button bet out $50. I instinctively pushed all in. The player on the button briefly went into the think tank and then called my all in. He showed K 6 for the lower full house just as I had suspected.

Throughout this hand I was simply playing to extract the maximum profit. I wasn’t making eye contact with the other players. If I had, I might have been tempted to play this hand a little differently. The joy I experienced when the dealer started shoving the pot in my direction quickly changed when I looked over at my opponent. He looked dejected – he pushed away from the table, apparently broke. It was only now that I really paid attention to the fact he was very elderly, with oxygen being pumped through tubes into his nose. I suddenly felt a sick, empty feeling in my stomach as if I had done something terribly wrong. I seriously felt like crying but I maintained as I watched the elderly man walk away from the table.

Intellectually I know I did nothing wrong. Everyone who sits down at the poker table assumes some risk. It goes with the territory. Still, I can’t help but feel a little sad about this game. I haven’t seen the elderly gentleman again. I hope he’s ok. We may compete fiercely at the table, but we’re still a poker family.
