You have got to play a good all around strategy poker holdem if you want to succeed. The stability of your play will be determined by a lot of key points. In this article, I’ll give you three Texas hold em tips intended for a good head start. Keeping a strict set of rules and improving it along the way while experience is accumulated should ensure success.
1. You need to choose your hands carefully. As a rule of thumb, playing anywhere between 10% and 20% of hands should allow you to have the edge. Every time you get involved, you should be in a spot where you are confident to win the hand.
2. Staying focused is of utmost importance. Since you won’t be playing in more or less 80% of the hands, it is easy to fall out but it is very important to pay attention. This is the time you take to gather information about you opponents. A positive strategy poker holdem will take account of the others’ behaviour. If you notice a specific betting pattern, aggressiveness or passivity, be sure to take note of it for future playable hands.
3. Starting with a good bankroll and playing the right buy-in will ensure that you don’t go broke. This is very important, especially in the beginning stages. You can’t always win and you have to make sure to have enough to go through the bad times. Playing no more than 1% of your money in buy-ins is a good rule of thumb. This will also give you a sense of security about your bankroll which is very important because you just can’t play your “A” game when you’re scared to lose it. Stay in control.
Theses are my top 3 beginner Texas hold em tips that you can follow to your discretion.

As poker continues to gain more and more mainstream acceptance, women are becoming increasingly interested in taking up the game. Until the most recent poker boom, poker was mostly a male populated card game. Less than 10% of the players at a typical casino poker game were women.
In fact, playing poker at a casino or brick and mortar poker club is something many women are still hesitant to do. The old chauvanistic male attitudes and visions of smoke-filled backrooms may account for much of this hesitantcy. For whatever reason, ladies have yet to fully embrace the real world poker games in any large numbers.
Online poker is another story. Studies show that over one third of online poker players are female. Women are the fastest growing segment of the online poker playing public. In general, women prefer playing poker online. Playing poker online provides them with a convenient and less intimidating way to learn and become more proficient at the game. Also, women tend to prefer the lower stakes available online.
While men may gamble for the “action” or to compete, women tend to play poker as a means of escape. In general men play to win and women, while competitive, play for more social reasons. Other reasons women cite for preferring online poker include being able to play poker from a safe home environment, not having to get dressed up to play at a casino, being able to play poker in an environment where gender is not an issue.
Playing poker online from her own home is not only safer, it is also more convenient. The female online player can play poker at a time that fits into her busy schedule. The idea of getting dressed up, driving for miles to get to a casino, tipping dealers, waiting for a table, and driving back home after possibly a few drinks is something few women find appealing. Contrast this to relaxing by playing a few hands of online poker at the end of the day and it is easy to see why many more women are choosing to play their poker online.
On final reason many women prefer to play online has to do with the boorish attitudes of some male players. Whether it’s the overbearing bigot, the solicitous suitor, or the patronizing patriarch; women just don’t want to be bothered with all that.
Online poker provides a perfect solution. The female player can play in an online environment were gender is not an issue. If there is offensive chat, she can simply turn the offenders chat function off with the click of her mouse. She can choose a screen name that doesn’t reveal her gender if she so desires.
So, ladies, if you’re looking for a safe, convenient place to polish your poker skills, online poker offers great advantages over it’s brick and mortar counterparts. Many women women have already discovered the online poker world. Check it out. I think you’ll be impressed. Poker’s not just for the boys anymore.

Again I will be defending the honor of drunk poker players all over the world!
Today I have the good fortune to be playing in another Poker Listings Run-Good Challenge Poker Tournament at Poker Stars. At stake in this game are two World Series of Poker entries. This is a private invitational tournament just for poker bloggers. You may recall last week that I made the final table but had the misfortune of making a short stacked push with my AK suited, only to run into pocket aces. Well this week will be different!
Watch here – I’ll update this post throughout the game today, hopefully culminating with my victory dance as I collect my entry into the WSOP.

What: PokerListings Run-Good Challenge Tournament (Week 2)
When: Saturday 5/23/09
Where: Poker Stars

UPDATE: This will unfortunately be very brief. Dr Pauly took me out when my pocket jacks ran into his pocket aces. I would normally fold JJ preflop in the early stage of a 9 player tourney but Dr Pauly is a cagey player. I saw him making moves last week so I thought (incorrectly) that my jacks were the best hand. Best of luck to everyone in the game.
Here is a list of the other poker bloggers who played in the Run-Good Challenge Poker Tournament.
WINNERS: Congrats to TripJax (TripJax Blog) and IndomacK (Matt Showell from PokerListings.com) for winning their WSOP seats in the Poker Listings Run-Good Challenge.
I was chatting with my friend Brad a few months ago about how difficult it has been for me to meet single men who can hang with me. I’ve had two guys “break it off” in the past year. No - It’s not because of my drinking! It’s because of my poker lifestyle.
Men may come and go but poker is a constant in my life. I love the game! I live for it. I play late into the night, and into the early morning hours. I read about poker before bed. I talk about poker with my friends. And I plan vacations around the locations of poker rooms. I’m not for everyone and I understand that.
So I’m talking to Brad and we decided there should be a poker dating site so us single players can meet like-minded people. There isn’t much available out there so we started working on a poker personals site. What started out as a simple idea has taken shape very nicely and I’d like to invite you to be a beta tester.
This is a dating site for poker players, developed by poker players. We’d love to hear your feedback. You can contact me to report any bugs. You never know – I might have been drinking too much and messed up the coding somewhere.
NoLimitPersonals.com is a new dating site so please be patient with us. There may be a few little bugs and traffic to the site will grow gradually. You can help a lot if you’ll just create a free profile, post a few message forum posts and help us get the word out. We will greatly appreciate your support by giving us links from your blog or web site. You can also copy the banner from this post if you’d like.
Here are some features of NoLimitPersonals.com
Poker players and fans are welcome to join. It doesn’t matter what you play or what levels. We just hope you appreciate poker nearly as much as we do. NoLimitPersonals.com will always be a completely free way to meet other poker players for friendship or romance!
I hope you enjoy the site. Please let me know what you think. Do you have any ideas to help grow the site.
I was thrilled to be invited to participate in the 5/16/09 PokerListings.com Run-Good Challenge Poker Tournament, a private invitational event for poker media types, on Poker Stars. We started out with 25 of the most ornery poker players you’ll find anywhere. I don’t think these players were drinking enough!
My early strategy was to play pretty much like I would any sit n go tournament. If you’ve read my sit n go strategy then you know that means pretty conservative in the early rounds and then gradually becoming more aggressive as the game progresses. This tournament only paid first place – an entry into a $1500.00 buy-in tournament at the World Series of Poker. My goal was to play tight-aggressive and be sure I made the final table. At that point I knew I’d have to take my chances and be very aggressive to give myself an opportunity to take down the prize. Sounds good so far. This is where these ornery characters come in. They weren’t going easy on a drunk blonde chick. I had to work for my seat at the final table!

The problem was they kept trying to take my chips and I got beat up on a little just before we made it to 9 players. After making the final table I found myself short stacked, moreso than I would have liked. I sure wanted to have more chips than this when I got to the final table. I knew this would force me to pick a spot and try to pick up the blinds or double up. My chance came when I looked down at AK of hearts. I pushed all in and got called by one player (sap-player) who turns over AA – yikes! The flop offered no help and so I busted out in 8th place.
Here is the field of players with links to their blogs or bio page. I’ll update links as I get more info on the other players.
At the end of the day Rakewell1 won the tournament – congrats! It was a tough tourney with lots of ups and downs. The chips swings were wild. I’m hoping they’ll invite me back to the next tournament on Saturday 5/23/09. I’d like to get to know this group of people better. Ok, I’d like to have another chance at that WSOP seat too!

I’ve been invited to particicpate in the PokerListings.com “Run-Good Challenge” Poker Tournament for bloggers on Poker Stars. At stake are three World Series of Poker tournament entries. This is also a great opportunity to network with the good folks from PokerListings and some of the best poker bloggers on the Internet. The tournaments will be held on two consecutive Saturdays with the first kicking off on 5/16/09 at 11:00 am Pacific Time Zone. I will be defending the honor of drunk poker players all over the world!
Now some of you are probably wondering why I haven’t been to the big event yet. I almost got in via a satellite tournament a couple years ago when I made it to 6th place. It was a nice payday but I missed the top two prizes (paid entries in the WSOP main event). I’ve had some nice tournament finishes since then so I think I’m ready for this challenge. I’m itching for my chance and since I just can’t swing the WSOP entry fee on my own, these bloggers better watch out!

“pokergal” asked a question in response to my article titled “Take a Break from Poker.”
So, what’s your advice when the cards still run bad (and I mean bad) after several breaks. I’m talking months this has been going on…

Since luck does play into poker, we should all expect losing sessions and they sometimes seem to string into losing weeks or months. My first thought when I was asked this question were that I’d try switching up my games. Try limit if I had been playing no-limit, try cash games if I was playing tournaments or sit n goes. That’s an easy answer, but please allow me to analyze this question a little more in depth.
I recently read an article in Bluff Magazine by Jeff Madsen titled Madsen is Back! Jeff pointed out the fact that he didn’t cash in anything significant since his original World Series of Poker win back in 2006. At that time he was recognized as the 2006 WSOP Player of the Year. He persevered through months and years of losses, believing in himself and his playing ability. Now, in 2009 he has wins in the $1500 buy-in tournament and the $10,000 buy-in HORSE Championship at Commerce Casino in California. Jeff says “The problem with overall results is that they can sway your perception of yur own game negatively at times and, of course, positively at times. Jeff proposes that you just believe in yourself and get out there and play to your full potential. He points out that you must put aside worrying about how you think you can play or how you should play, and just go out and play.
I wish we didn’t have to suffer these prolonged periods of losses. I’ve been dealing with a downswing of my own lately. It can cause us to question our abilities. That in turn can change how we play the game, with potentially disastrous results. We may lose confidence or become overly aggressive (read that as reckless) and our game suffers in the process.
I remember Mike Caro saying the true test of a poker player is how they handle themselves when they are losing. Am I playing my very best game even when I’m losing? If I can honestly answer yes to that question then eventually the odds are going to swing back in my favor and I will resume winning.
Every player has losing streaks. I try to focus on whether I believe I’m playing my very best game. Sometimes I conclude that I’m not so I take a break from poker and do a little reading, specifically trying to resolve whatever my current problem is. I can tell you I spend a good amount of time working on my self-discipline. When things go bad the gambler in me comes out and I start taking risks I wouldn’t otherwise take. Perhaps you know this scenario. You’ve seen hand after hand where lucky players suck out so you start playing that game, hoping for your break to get you back into the money. That’s exactly where we shouldn’t go when things are going bad. Once I’ve had a break from the game, did a little reading and regrouped then I give it another try.
There are some strategic changes that can be helpful when you’re experiencing losing poker sessions. Bear in mind that other players are watching you and become bolder when they see you losing. You will probably find it helpful to become tighter than you normally are. Pick solid starting hands, raise a little less often and don’t take chances bluffing at pots. Avoid fancy plays. When your “mojo” is gone it just isn’t profitable.
Another piece of advice I’ve read about breaking these bad streaks is not to even think of it as a streak. I know that can be easier said than done, but the reality is that each session is totally independent of the ones that preceded it and the ones that will follow it. Your job as a good poker player is to make the very best decisions you can during that session. Each time we begin a new poker session it is a fresh start. We must never allow these losing streaks to influence our future games.
When I’m on a losing streak I find it’s sometime helpful to play shorter sessions, focusing on playing the very best I can and then walking away after small wins. It’s amazing what this little boost of confidence can do to help break up those losing streaks. Belief in yourself goes a long way.
I hope this is helpful in some way. I know how frustrating it can be to suffer these streaks. May the poker goddess smile on you. : )
I think it’s valuable to listen to different perspectives about poker so I sometimes publish other players’ advice. Here, Freddie Johnson gives his advice on how to profit from Sit n Go Poker. He makes a very good point when he talks about the difference between being aggressive and being reckless. I refer to this as “selective aggression” I hope you enjoy this Sit n Go Poker article.
While no limit texas holdem may dominate in the coverage of the poker world today, thanks to the televised World Series of Poker, there are
a lot of different poker games you can play. In fact, there are a lot of different versions of texas holdem poker, including sit n go poker. So what is sit n go poker? And how does play differ from “regular” texas holdem? And most importantly, how do you play sit n go so you can make more cash?
No limit texas holdem tournamnet play and no limit texas holdem sit n go are both no limit texas holdem poker games. But NL Holdem tournaments and NL Holdem Sit n Go games are two entirely different animals. And this means your poker game plan has to be different in sit n go if you want to be successful and cash.
No limit sit n go’s are very different from cash games and a much shorter verion of multi-table no limit tourneys. The blinds shoot up fast (every 10 to 20 hands or so) and before you know it make up a big part of your stack. To stay in a sit n go game, you have to get more aggressive as the blinds increase.
Of course, a key to winning texas holdem sit n go games is to be more aggressive as the blinds go up, NOT to be more reckless as the blinds increase. Having a plan is the difference between aggressive and reckless and most likely will be the difference between cashing and not cashing.
In sit n go games, you don’t want to be aggressive initially. Only play premium hands for the first few blind increases. This will keep you from losing chips you’ll neeed later when the blinds go up. You don’t want to find yourself short stacked early or you might as well call it a night.
Playing only premium hands initially may also have an added benefit. Later in the sit n go game, when you’re being more aggressive, your opponents may be more likely to fold against you because they’ll think you have a top hand.
When’s a good time to kick it up in your texas holdem sit n go game? If you’re in late position and it’s folded around to you and the blinds and antes will increase your stack by more than 20%, go all-in. Most times you won’t get called.
Eventually, as the blind increase, it will become a stealing war as everyone has to get aggressive because the blinds are so big relative to their stacks. This is where you need to pick your spots and become aggressive. You’ll find yourself taking bad beats a lot but that’s the nature of sit in go no limit texas holdem. When people get more aggressive with wacky hands, the cards won’t always fall your way.
Remember, keeping your chips early will allow you to be more selective in being aggressive later, giving you better odds of coming out on top in no limit texas holdem sit n go play.

I don’t plug many poker sites but I came across this one that I think is very helpful and it’s free. PokerListings.com is an online poker guide where you can find tons of information about the games but there are two sections that really got me excited.
1. Poker Strategy Articles: This is a bonanza of free poker strategies including Hold Em, Omaha and Seven-Card Stud. You can read the articles and view their tutorial videos. The strategies presented start with the absolute beginner and progress toward more advanced play. There are specific sections for beginners, tournaments, cash games, limit hold em, poker psychology, bankroll management and poker odds. No matter where you are in your progress as a poker player, you’re sure to find something helpful here. It’s all well written and FREE!
2. Poker Blogs: If you enjoy reading blogs as much as I do, then this will be right up your alley. These blogs are all related to poker strategies from the perspective of advance players who share their knowledge with everyone. I just read one blog post, by Steve Zolotow of Team Full Tilt, titled “Becoming a Complete Poker Player.” Steve advises everyone to learn all variations of poker to become a more complete player and to be able to take advantage of profitable opportunities when they exist. Other poker pro and celebrity blog authors include Andy Bloch, Liz Lieu, Jason Mercier, Matt Stout, Nolan Dalla, Arthur Reber, Sorel Mizzi and Annette Obrestad. Reading blogs by top level players is a great way to expand your knowledge of the game.
